How to Improve your English Grammar

A lot of my friends are turned off by blogging because they say that they are not really good in speaking and writing in English. If you've been following my blog, you know that my English isn't really perfect. I make the occasional grammar mistakes and there are even typos in my post. Humility aside, I'm still proud to say that compared with some amateur Asian bloggers, my writing skills can be passed off as done by a natural English-speaking person.

Anyways, if you're looking for ways to improve your grammar, both English and written, here are my tips:

  1. READ! Yes, it's the oldest tip in the book but I have to tell you that it REALLY works. Reading does not only improve your vocabulary but also improves your knowledge-base. Be aware that you should read books that you are interested in, otherwise, no matter how many books you've read, if you're not interested in it, you will have a hard time comprehending its contents.
  2. Try to write your own short story. If you're fond of reading novels, try to make a short story yourself. Writing short stories not only gives you that feeling of control since you're in charge of the outcome of your story, it will also improve your writing skills. Plus, several days or months later, you can read what you've written and then be your own worst critic.
  3. Watch English movies/TV shows. Though it is best to love our own, watching international films does not only provide entertainment value, it would also give you an insight of the American culture and if the movie/TV show is decent enough, you might even pick up good conversational skills.
  4. Watch English movies/TV shows with subtitles or foreign movies with English subtitles. This is probably the one tip that works best for me. Watching movies with subtitles may take your focus off the movie but then you can be greatly focused on plot of the movie itself. By watching movies with subtitles, I was able to pick up some correct pronunciation of commonly used English words.

Anyways, that's it. Hope you learn something from this.
